Storm Damage Competitive Bid

Montana’s spring storms can cause damage to your home in a lot of different ways. Strong winds that blow off shingles to softball sized hail that breaks through roofs. One of the first things that most people do after a damaging storm is to start looking for a roofing contractor. Contact the right roofing contractor so that the roof that is put on your home will protect your home as well as you and your family for years to come.

Storm Damage Competitive Bid
Every roof, every situation is different. Going with the lowest bidder can do you more harm in the long run. Especially when the lowest bidder comes in the form of an out-of-town contractor you aren’t familiar with. For most people, storm damage means that your insurance company will be covering at least a good chunk of the tab. So instead of focusing on the lowest bidder, focus on a reputable company doing that is licensed and bonded. A company that cares about you and your family first and only delivers quality work.

Billings Best Roofing Contractor

So what’s the most important thing to remember? You don’t need bids. You need reputation.

The contractor you choose should…

  • Be local. If you have issues, you want to be able to contact the company that put your roof on, if they are from out of state, they could be long gone. Chasing the next hailstorm.
  • Have a good reputation and use quality roofing materials in the community. You should always want quality roofing materials, regardless of the situation. In this case especially (when the price tag is set by insurance), you’ll want to pick the best quality roofing materials, not just the lowest cost.
  • Work within the guidelines that your insurance company sets. If a roofing company offers you a deal and tells you not to worry about all of the add-ons, that is a red flag. Call your insurance company; make sure that is true so you aren’t stuck with the bill. Since the price of the work will be set by your insurance provider, according to industry standards. It is not your contractor that gets to determine the cost. Choose a contractor who will work within that scope, choosing the best quality materials to maximize the insurance payment without charging you an absorbent cost above what the insurance company will pay.

Summer Storms and Roof Damage

The summer is just around the corner here in Billings, and while the warmer days and longer night conjure such an appealing daydream, it also means that it is the time of year for dramatic hail storms, violent lightning storms, and even possible tornadoes.  It is not all that bad, unless you are one of those who has had to struggle with an insurance company to cover their end of a replacement roof.  If you think you have damage to your roof from a storm, give Bruce Tall Construction a call to assess your roof for you, and Bruce Tall Construction can even help you to take the next steps with your insurance company to ensure that your home stays protected from the elements with a functional roof.  It’s important to document damages to the roof immediately, so that insurance companies don’t have questions as to when or how the damage may have occurred.

Determine if your roof has been damaged

You can easily check most of the roof from the street for most homes.  While it is beneficial to walk the roof and check for damage up close, the roof can be a dangerous place, and it may be best to call a professional for an up close inspection.  But, if you want to do the preliminary check on your own, head out to the street or backyard—if you’re in the street please be sure to check for cars—and inspect the roof.  The repetitive blast from hailstones can take out entire sections of asphalt shingles.  Also, shingles will bruise or dent from hail, although these dents or bruises are not always visible, so, it might be beneficial to have a set of binoculars to check the roof.  Also, one important sign of damage to a roof with asphalt shingles is to check the downspouts of gutter for grit that has been pelted from the shingles during the storm.  Even if you cannot see damage from the street, in the event that there is grit from the shingles either in the downspouts, on the ground at the base of downspouts, or in the gutters, it may be time to call a professional to check the roof.  If you have spotted damage to your roof post-storm, make sure to document the damage, if possible, with photographs.

How Soon Must Storm Damage be Repaired?

How Soon Must Storm Damage be Repaired?

We have already had a HUGE hail storm to start off this hail and storm season and the question we get asked most is how soon must storm damage be repaired?

How Soon Must Storm Damage be Repaired?

The answer of course is going to depend on the amount of damage that your roof and house has received. Your insurance policy may also factor in on the decision. Read your policy, are you given a time frame on when storm damage needs to repaired by? Most Insurance Companies allow 24 months, some policies only allow you 12 months, but checking your insurance policy should be one of the first things to do.

New Roof Flashings Billings MT

Insist Upon Installation of New Roof Flashings

Are you having your roof replaced after the recent hail storms? If so, please make sure that your roofer is license and bonded. Also insist upon installation of new roof flashings.

When your roof is replaced, some contractors will “re-use” and not replace the metal roof flashings. Flashings are where the roof comes together with the siding and around skylights and chimneys as well.

Insist Upon Installation of New Roof Flashings

It does take extra time to replace those flashings, especially when those flashings are embedded behind stucco siding. That is why they often get overlooked. At Bruce Tall Construction, we always take the extra time for all of our clients.

If flashings are overlooked, your roof can leak. Most leaks typically occur at the flashings. Flashings are without a doubt one of the most critical components of the roof. We are Billings Best Roofers and we routinely replace the old roof flashngs, no matter how difficult the task.

Remember when you’re searching for a roofer, the cheapest bid may not always be the best bid. Ask if they are going to replace the flashings, especially where the roof comes together with the siding. Get it in writing. If this gets overlooked, your new roof could leak and deteriorate much quicker.

Steel Buildings

The Montana countryside is full of barns. Ranch-style barns are an icon of the American West. Some of the barns you’ll see on the landscape were erected a century ago. Most barns are erected in two different styles: pole barns and steel reinforced barns. Pole barns are traditional structures in which poles are buried in the ground and used as supports for the roof. This type of construction is simple, although it’s definitely not a rugged, durable form of construction—but pole barns will continue to stand, with luck, for decades to come. Steel constructed barns, which give the appearance of pole barns, but with the added bonus of being truly durable, should continue to stand the test of time for the next century.

There’s a few differences in the construction of both pole barns and steel-reinforced barns. Steel reinforced barns are constructed using steel columns that attach to a concrete foundation. Because of modern machinery, this makes the construction of the barn’s frame a quick process—quicker then a pole barn’s construction. The speed with which a steel reinforced barn can be built also makes the construction costs for the steel reinforced barn much cheaper. The steel barn frame is also highly weather resistant and resistant to mold. There’s no need for maintenance to the steel barn construction, and painting is not needed.

Steel barn frames are more expensive to build. It’s the upfront costs. Pole barns are less money to initially build, however there are other costs to consider for the life of the barn. A pole barns will need maintenance at some point in it’s life.   Steel reinforced barns also may not last as long as the steel reinforced barn, so there could be replacements costs, depending on the initial quality of the construction of the pole barn.

Steel reinforced barns are also much better for livestock. Pole barns can develop unsanitary conditions for the animal due to the style of the barn’s construction. A steel reinforced barn is a much better choice when the barn is to be used to house animals.

Please contact Bruce Tall Construction for all of your steel frame needs as well as your roofing and all of your construction needs.

Today’s homeowner has numerous choices as to the materials used to build a roof. There’s even a host of different style options. One option that most people don’t think of is metal—in fact it’s rare to see it as a material choice on most residential homes. The concept of the metal roof is associated with ruggedness, like a roof atop a cabin in the woods somewhere. And it has this distinction for good reason: metal is very durable, and there’s very little maintenance during the life of the roof. Also, a metal roof is a nice contrast over log walls. While a metal roof isn’t for everyone, here’s a few pros and cons to using them to top your home.

roofing installation and repair billings mt, Roofer Billings MT

The most obvious advantage to using metal building materials is metal’s durableness. A metal roof can last as long as the house—considering it’s properly installed. It’s resistant to mildew and rot. Obviously it wont easily damage in the event of fire; and, because of it’s hard, slick sides, it repels rain and snow easily. It’s also good at insulating a home: the metal itself does not have a high R-Value, but the space between the metal roof and the roof deck can be used for insulation. Also, because a metal roof doesn’t directly absorb the heat from the sun’s rays, it helps with keeping the midday heat at bay, thereby lowering the amount of air conditioning needed to cool the home on a warm day.

There are some drawbacks, however. One such drawback is the initial cost. While other roofing materials are as expensive—at least in initial purchase—the materials for a metal roof will cost more than more common building materials like an asphalt shingle. There’s also the sound factor. The sound of rain or hail on a metal roof is much louder than a roof covered in shingles. This could also be an advantage to owning a metal roof, if you’re someone who enjoys the soft, comforting sounds of rain. Also, metal roofs can dent—big hail can be a problem.

Metal roofs might not be for everyone. While it’s true that many metal roofs look beautiful and rustic atop a log cabin, it’s also a possibility with residential construction.

Siding Billings MT

Your home’s siding protects the home from the elements. Regardless of the material used to side the house that siding will handle the brunt of wind, rain, hail, ice and snow. And, while it’s protecting the home, it’s also got to look nice. All siding materials have pros and cons when you compare the strength and durability, or the concept in which the siding is easily put-on, cleaned, or replaced. And, with so many choices of siding—way too many to commit each one to a blog post—we’re going to examine and stick-with vinyl siding, because vinyl is the most widely used siding type in building today.

commercial siding billings mt, roofing and siding billings mt

Vinyl siding is durable, it’s cheap, and it’s easy to hang to the side of the house, and it’s easy to replace a panel when one is damaged or appears more-weathered then the rest. Different things can weather vinyl panels which makes the color of the panel fade. Consider errant garden or lawn sprinklers, peppering the siding with water, daily. That area will look considerably more-weathered then the rest of the home. But, what if the area in question is at the front of the house? And it’s faded look is destroying the curb-appeal of the home? You’ve got options. You can replace the siding with new panels. The only problem with doing this, however, is that the new panel didn’t weather with the rest of the home, and, most likely, it will look overly bright against the other panels. Your only other choice then is to swap panels out from a different area of the home. Look around the home and find an inconspicuous spot at which people rarely spend time. Take those panels, which probably wont have weathered identically to the surrounding panels where your making your patch, but it will still be considerably closer to the look then a new panel, and just swap the panels.

Replacing vinyl siding panels is a relatively simple process. And, if you’re a DIY’er at heart, it’s a job you can easily tackle in a weekend. For those of you concerned with your abilities to do the job, call a professional. It’s a quick-and-simple job for a professional.
